Malayalee Rituals
Many Malayalees, especially in Malaysia, kowtow to the larger Indian population's rites and rituals. They have this attitude of not being "fanatic". I simply don't understand this rationale. When they can dictate what we should do or cannot do according to their rites and rituals, why can't we as Malayalees insist on our rights too.
Many a time a temple priest says he knows the Malayalee rites and rituals that are important for a Malayalee wedding. But in the end we find that he adapts some of his community's rituals and says that that is the Malayalee ritual. 2 nilavilakku (standing lights) and the nirapara with coconut flower is all that is required for a Malayalee wedding, according to their reasoning. And our Malaysian Malayalee goes along with this.
There are several qualified Malayalees in Malaysia who can and are willing to perform these rites and rituals, but igo and jealousy prevent these so called Malayalees from approaching these qualified persons. The talk now is "Do you have a license to practice?" Do the temple priests have the license? If it is given by their association , then similarly the Malaysian Malayalee Hindu Parishad can also issue such licenses.
Malayalees in Malaysia basically are gutless. They will allow the others to trample their rites and rituals. This happens not only in weddings but also funerals.
When will the Malayalee realise that their language, culture and rites and rituals are being slowly strangled.
God help the Malaysian Malayalee.
